About
Set beneath the impressive backdrop of Caerhays Castle, Porthluney Cove is among the most picturesque beaches on Cornwall’s south coast. The cove, set within St Austell Bay just a short drive from St Austell, is known for its wide stretch of sand backed by rolling green hills.
Unlike many small coves in the area, Porthluney feels surprisingly open. At low tide, the beach expands into a broad sandy shoreline, giving plenty of room for wandering beside the sea. The combination of the castle, coastal views and gently sloping beach creates a peaceful and scenic setting.
For dog owners, it’s an inviting spot to savour the coast together, especially outside peak summer, when the beach feels wonderfully tranquil.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome on Porthluney Cove Beach all year with no seasonal restrictions.
Things To See & Do
At low tide, Porthluney offers a long sandy stretch for easy shoreline walks. Dogs that enjoy running and paddling have ample space outside peak periods.
The gradually sloping beach also provides an inviting space for dogs to play in the shallows when the sea is calm.
Beyond the beach stands Caerhays Castle, an imposing Victorian landmark surrounded by exquisite gardens. In spring, its grounds burst with magnolia and camellia blooms.
The South West Coast Path runs along the cliffs above the beach, offering wonderful coastal walks with views across St Austell Bay.
The path leads to other scenic spots along the coastline, making it easy to turn a beach visit into a longer outing with your dog.
Porthluney Cove has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Outside the peak summer season, it feels calm and uncrowded, ideal for those who enjoy quieter coastal walks with their dog.
Early mornings and late afternoons are especially beautiful when the light softens over the bay, and the beach becomes even more peaceful.
Access and Facilities
Porthluney Cove is well organised thanks to its location beside the Caerhays estate, and facilities are available near the beach entrance, where you’ll find a large car park, toilets, and a beach cafe.
From the car park, it is just a short, flat, sandy path to the beach.
