About
Pickering Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle that sits on the edge of the North York Moors. During the 13th and 14th centuries, Pickering Castle’s wooden outer defences were replaced by stone curtain walls, and today you can still explore three of the remaining towers.
Wandering through the ruins is the main draw, and it’s a lovely little circuit. You can walk along the outer bailey, climb up towards the motte, and take in the views across the rooftops of Pickering.
The castle is just a short stroll from the town centre, and we would recommend a castle visit along with a wander through Pickering itself.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome on leads throughout the castle grounds.
Access and Facilities
Pickering Castle is easy enough to find. It sits above the town on Castle Gate, and the car park is right next to the entrance. This is a small car park, but there are plenty of other options within Pickering, just a short walk away.
There are toilets on site, plus a small shop where you can pick up a hot or cold drink. There aren’t dog waste bins inside the castle grounds, but you’ll find them down in the town.
