If you’re looking for something a little different to do with your dog in Pembrokeshire, Castell Henllys Iron Age Village is well worth adding to your list.
Tucked away near Crymych in the northern part of Pembrokeshire, this fascinating hillfort takes you back around 2,000 years. Reconstructed roundhouses stand on the very spot where Iron Age buildings once stood, while the surrounding woodland and countryside make this much more than a history lesson.
We think it’s a lovely choice when you’re looking for a dog-friendly day out that combines history, nature and a bit of adventure.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome throughout the site as long as they are kept on a lead.
It’s worth remembering that this is a historic site surrounded by nature, so keeping your dog on a lead is important.
What's On Offer
The highlight of a visit is, of course, the reconstructed village. I’d allow around 2–3 hours for a relaxed visit; you could see the main village more quickly, but there’s little reason to rush.
Walking between the roundhouses gives you a real sense of how the settlement may have looked thousands of years ago.
The buildings have been recreated using traditional materials and techniques, and the interpretation helps bring the Iron Age to life.
Depending on when you visit, there may be demonstrations, talks and activities taking place.
Your dog might not be quite as interested in Iron Age crafts as you are, but they’ll certainly enjoy sniffing their way around this unusual landscape.
One of the things I really like about Castell Henllys is that there’s more to see than the roundhouses.
The site includes peaceful woodland, wildlife areas and trails, making it a good place to combine your visit with a gentle walk. For dog owners, the woodland setting is particularly welcome.
There’s also a Barefoot Trail, children’s play area and picnic areas, so there’s plenty here to keep families occupied too.

Our Tips for Visiting with a Dog
Keep your dog on a lead
This is a requirement throughout the site, so bring a comfortable lead that gives you enough control while allowing your dog to explore.
Allow extra time
Don’t just visit the roundhouses and leave. The woodland and surrounding areas are part of what makes Castell Henllys special.
Bring water
Even though there are facilities on site, it’s always sensible to carry water for your dog, particularly on warm days.
Combine it with another Pembrokeshire attraction
Castell Henllys works particularly well as part of a bigger day out. You could combine it with a coastal walk or another dog-friendly attraction nearby.
