If you’re looking for fresh air, tail wags and a slice of countryside magic without venturing too far from the city, Hertfordshire’s got you covered. Tucked just north of London, this charming county is bursting with dog-friendly walks that’ll have you and your dog grinning from ear to ear. Whether you’re into peaceful canal strolls, woodland wanders or rolling hills where your pup can run free, Hertfordshire offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.
I’ve wandered plenty of these paths with my dog in tow, and there’s something special about this part of the UK. So pop the lead on, pack a few treats, and let’s take a look at five of my best dog-friendly walks in Hertfordshire.

1. Ashridge Estate, Berkhamsted
Type: Woodland and countryside
Distance Options: 1–10+ miles
Terrain: Forest trails, open fields
Dog Perks: Off-lead areas, dog-friendly cafe with outside seating
Ashridge Estate, part of the National Trust, is an absolute gem. The moment you arrive, you’ll notice the scent of pine and the hush of ancient woodland. Your dog will be off sniffing with delight before you can even shut the car door.
There are miles of well-maintained trails, so whether you’re up for a short loop or a full-blown ramble, there’s something for everyone. Keep an eye out for deer in the early morning or late evening, it’s a peaceful sight, though best admired with your dog on the lead!
There’s also a dog-friendly cafe at the visitor centre, where muddy paws and well-behaved pups are always welcome outside. There are also plenty of water bowls available.

☕ Nearby Pub: The Greyhound, Aldbury – dog-friendly in the bar and the outside courtyard.
🦴 Top Tip: Try the Ivinghoe Beacon loop for breathtaking views and lots of space to roam. Bring a lead for wildlife areas.
2. Lee Valley Park
Type: Riverside path and nature reserve
Distance Options: 2–8 miles (linear or circular options)
Terrain: Flat towpath, woodland in parts
Dog Perks: Plenty of water access, easy going for older dogs
If your dog loves water, they’ll be all over the Lee Valley walk along the River Lea. This one’s great for relaxed, flat walking and ideal if you fancy a gentle stroll with the option to go further if the mood takes you. Our walk here is located on the border of Hertfordshire and Essex, near the northern point of the park area in Hoddesdon.
Something is calming about walking beside the river, watching the canal boats chug by. Plus, there are loads of dog-friendly pubs along the way. The Fish & Eels in Hoddesdon is an excellent option for a cosy pint and a bowl of water for the dog.
📍 Start point: Dobbs Weir, EN11 0AY
☕ Nearby Pub: The Fish & Eels, Dobbs Weir – great food, riverside seating, dog treats behind the bar.
🦴 Top Tip: Spot herons and kingfishers if you’re lucky. Watch out for ducks and swans!
3. Heartwood Forest, Sandridge
Type: Young woodland, meadows
Distance Options: 2–6 miles
Terrain: Grassy paths, light woodland
Dog Perks: Huge off-lead potential, friendly community vibe
Heartwood Forest, near St Albans, is a dream come true for dogs. With over 850 acres of newly planted woodland, wildflower meadows and ancient trees, it’s open, safe, and full of places to explore.
It’s wonderful in spring when the bluebells put on a show, and come autumn, the leaves turn the paths into golden carpets. There’s a real sense of space here, and lots of dog owners gather, so it’s a sociable spot if your dog likes making friends.

☕ Nearby Pub: The Queens Head Sandridge – dog-friendly inside and out with home-cooked food.
🦴 Top Tip: Spring is bluebell heaven. Parking can get busy on weekends, so aim for an early start if possible.
4. Nomansland Common, Wheathampstead
Type: Heathland and scattered woods
Distance Options: 1–4 miles
Terrain: Open, unfenced space; dirt paths
Dog Perks: Off-lead play, lots of local dog walkers
Just outside Wheathampstead, Nomansland Common is a proper local favourite and can be combined with the Heartwood Forest walk above. It’s a vast, open stretch of heathland and woodland with well-trodden paths and plenty of room for a good run around.
📍 Postcode: AL4 8EL
☕ Nearby Pub: The Elephant & Castle – a local gem with a welcoming dog policy.
🦴 Top Tip: Since there’s no fencing, ensure your recall game is strong before unclipping the lead.

5. Verulamium Park, St Albans
Type: City park with history and greenery
Distance Options: 1–3 miles
Terrain: Paved paths, grassy areas
Dog Perks: Big fields, lake for ducks (on-lead needed), Roman ruins to sniff
Right in the heart of St Albans, Verulamium Park offers a lovely balance of history, greenery and space to walk. There’s a big lake, Roman ruins to explore, and loads of open fields for a good run.
It’s a bit more manicured than the other walks above, but it’s handy for a day out. There’s a dog-friendly cafe in the park, and the town centre is just a short walk away if you fancy making a full day of it.
📍 Postcode: AL3 4SW
☕ Nearby Pub: Ye Olde Fighting Cocks – dog-friendly with inside and outside seating.
