About
Hidden along the rugged coast of west Cornwall, Penberth Cove is one of those places that feels wonderfully untouched by time. Tucked between steep cliffs on the Penwith Peninsula, the tiny cove sits a short distance from Penzance and forms part of the dramatic Atlantic-facing coastline.
The approach alone makes Penberth special. A narrow lane winds down through farmland before opening onto a cluster of granite fishermen’s cottages, a small stone harbour and a rocky beach that feels completely authentic. This is still a working fishing cove, and the boats and gear along the slipway add to its character.
For visitors with dogs, Penberth Cove offers a peaceful place to explore, with rugged scenery, coastal air and the feeling of discovering a hidden corner of Cornwall.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome at Penberth Cove year-round. However, because the cove is a working fishing harbour, it’s important to keep dogs under control and respectful of the surroundings.
The surrounding coastline is also part of the South West Coast Path, where dogs are welcome but may need to be kept on leads around livestock.
Things To See & Do
Although we say this is a harbour, it is really a sloping stone beach at the heart of the cove. Watching fishing boats being launched from the slope gives the cove a timeless feel.
Penberth Cove sits directly along the South West Coast Path, making it a great stopping point during a coastal walk. From here, you can head along the cliffs toward nearby coves and viewpoints, with dramatic Atlantic views and rugged scenery all the way.
The surrounding coastline is full of small, secluded beaches. One of the best-known nearby is Porthcurno Beach, famous for its white sand and turquoise water.
Exploring this stretch of coast reveals a mix of quiet fishing coves and dramatic cliff scenery.
Access and Facilities
Penberth Cove is a small, traditional fishing cove with no facilities.
Although the road accesses the cove, it is not available for visitors – only residents. You will need to park at the Treen car park and walk down the hill by either the country lane or the coast path; in either case, it is about a mile.
Nearby villages and towns such as Porthcurno and Penzance offer cafes, pubs, and other facilities.
